The Story Behind the Images

by Lisa on January 20, 2010

The site banner was created by my friend Anne and the images were chosen for specific reasons.

Artistry
The stacked quilt and afghan remind me of my mom’s crafting throughout my entire life. In recent years, she has focused almost exclusively on quilting, making some of the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen. In a guest post on The Journal of Cultural Conversation, I shared the impact of her battle with cancer and how we are working together through crafting to raise funds for the MPD Foundation.

Philanthropy
The hammer and nail used to depict philanthropy was an easy choice. The summer after my sophomore year in high school, I participated in a week long service event – the Appalachia Service Project. During that week, my work crew and I built a bridge across a small creek and painted the home of an elderly woman in Mountain City, TN. That week started what has now become a lifetime of volunteer work. In addition to the MPD Foundation, I also currently support the Be the Match organization as often as I can. Be the Match connected my mom with her bone marrow donor and will always be meaningful to my family.

Travel
The gorgeous shores of the Cinque Terre in Italy is the final picture in the banner. This particular harbor is of Vernazza. My cousin and I visited this region of the world in a European adventure in 2001. Of all the places I have had the fortune of seeing, the Cinque Terre is one of my favorite places and images are throughout my home.

The pictures are all very beautiful, but I especially want the basket in the first one…

Isn’t it beautiful? We had baskets hanging from the beams growing up, so it was particularly reminiscent of growing up. It reminded me so much of my mom’s crafting when I found the pic on iStockphoto.

I love this! And I’m glad you shared the story behind each – what a wonderful idea! Your ASP mention brought back memories :)

Thanks Laura! I worked with my friend Anne and at first, the images were arbitrary, but as we were talking about the design, it made sense to have them be meaningful to me.
